Hi, I’m leilani reyes

I currently live and work in Denver, Colorado, and have been working on building my art practice and portfolio. I work in vivid colors and create abstract symmetrical shapes in each of my paintings. I paint in acrylic and acrylic gouache on wood panels, in scale ranging from small to substantial.

I grew up on the West Coast, in Long Beach, California, and loved spending time by the ocean. I worked at the aquarium in Long Beach in my late teens and spent hours observing the shapes, colors and textures of marine plants and animals. I traded the ocean for the mountains in 2021 and have been living in Colorado, finding new inspiration in rock formations and sediment layers in the Rocky Mountains. I ingest these influences and images, and the art I create is a medley of them.

In addition to my major inspirations in nature, I’m also influenced by psychology. I work with colors that have the strongest psychological impact on me. Red, oranges, yellows and pinks are the ones that I most resonate with at this moment and that have an inspiring, energizing and joyful effect on me as I work with them. Not only the colors have a subconscious impact, but also the symmetrical shapes I create that resemble a Rorschach test. After beginning to show my art to more people, I’ve heard a variety of interpretations of what the shapes might be depicting, and I encourage people to engage in that process. I create what comes from my inspirations when they interact with my own subconscious, and others may get out something different than what I put in, which is one of the beauties of abstract art.
